Biograil Closes €20 Million Funding Round
Copenhagen/Bonn — Biograil ApS, a Copenhagen-based biotech company developing a unique oral device for administering therapeutics that would otherwise require injection, announced the completion of a 20 million euro funding round. Verve Ventures and Megatrend Invest are backing the company, while HTGF—which led Biograil’s seed syndicate in 2019—is participating through its growth fund, HTGF Opportunity.
The additional funding will support ongoing activities for the planned Phase 1 clinical trials of BIONDD® in order to achieve key milestones, such as nonclinical GLP studies, and to establish the GMP manufacturing process ahead of a larger round of financing in 2027.
Karsten Lindhardt, CEO of Biograil: “It’s great to see such strong support from existing internal investors and to have the HTGF Opportunity growth fund participate in this round. Combined with non-dilutive financing from partnerships, this will enable Biograil to continue advancing our BIONDD® technology toward Phase 1 clinical trials. The BIONDD® technology can enable the oral administration of large-market compounds for greater convenience and medical benefit, and furthermore create development opportunities for new, innovative combination products that may never have been feasible or attractive as conventional injectable or oral products.”
Anke Caßing, Principal at HTGF:
“We first invested in Biograil in 2019 because we recognized the potential of its approach to oral drug delivery. Our participation through the HTGF Opportunity reflects our continued confidence in this potential as the company prepares for clinical development.”
About Biograil ApSB
iograil is a Copenhagen-based biotech company that develops pharmaceutical products based on BIONDD®. The device comes in a standard-sized capsule, Double Zero or Single Zero, and can deliver active therapeutics to the gastric mucosa to effectively distribute them throughout the human body. Such therapeutics may include products currently on the market, including injectable drugs worth several billion dollars, or new chemical compounds that cannot otherwise be administered orally. The Biograil device uses a novel mechanism to facilitate the efficient delivery of active ingredients—specifically biologics—into the stomach lining using a proprietary platform technology manufactured via injection molding. The team behind Biograil consists of experienced entrepreneurs with extensive experience in founding successful biotech companies, as well as R&D executives responsible for the world’s first FDA-approved injection-molded oral tablet. — The Biograil investor consortium includes Megatrend Invest, Verve Ventures, High-Tech Gründerfonds, Eli Lilly and Co., Sanner Ventures, Evonik Venture Capital, Anobis GmbH, and Roquette Ventures.
