The recent finan\u00adcial crisis, the resul\u00adting unem\u00adploy\u00adment and the shrin\u00adking public reve\u00adnues of many Euro\u00adpean, as well as other count\u00adries, has high\u00adligh\u00adted the urgent need to find new ways to address social problems. Govern\u00adments around the world are heading toward a massive gap between expec\u00adted demand for social services and their ability to pay for them. Ther\u00ade\u00adfore, society must find inno\u00adva\u00adtive and crea\u00adtive ways to address the deep-seated social problems that are both an econo\u00admic burden and can put the fabric of society in a dange\u00adrously skewed position.<\/p>\n

Capi\u00adta\u00adlism largely igno\u00adres its social conse\u00adquen\u00adces. Despite govern\u00adments\u2019 efforts, levels of social and econo\u00admic inequa\u00adlity have remained high in all count\u00adries, and prevai\u00adling social problems such as unem\u00adploy\u00adment, poverty, home\u00adl\u00adess\u00adness, reci\u00addi\u00advism, drug addic\u00adtion, and school dropout rates remain deeply rooted social burdens. The social sector, tradi\u00adtio\u00adnally refer\u00adred to as the volun\u00adt\u00adary, nonpro\u00adfit, or third sector, has done its best to solve social problems that were inac\u00adces\u00adsi\u00adble to direct public efforts.
