Munich \u2014 The Euro\u00adpean defense tech sector is rapidly deve\u00adlo\u00adping into one of the most dyna\u00admic segments for venture capi\u00adtal invest\u00adments. Driven by geopo\u00adli\u00adti\u00adcal tensi\u00adons and increased secu\u00adrity aware\u00adness, the invest\u00adment volume has increased more than eight\u00adfold since 2021, from \u20ac344 million to \u20ac2.8 billion (2025). At the same time, the first leading compa\u00adnies \u2014 parti\u00adcu\u00adlarly from Germany \u2014 are estab\u00adli\u00adshing themselves. <\/p>\n

In 2025, the volume of venture capi\u00adtal inves\u00adted in Euro\u00adpean defense tech start-ups and scale-ups reached around 2.8 billion euros. In compa\u00adri\u00adson: in 2021, the volume was still at 344 million euros. At the same time, the number of tran\u00adsac\u00adtions rose from 52 to 154 deals (source: FCF Defen\u00adseTech Venture Capi\u00adtal Report 2026). <\/p>\n

\u201cWe are seeing a clear struc\u00adtu\u00adral shift in inves\u00adtor beha\u00advior. Defense and dual-use topics are now an inte\u00adgral part of many venture capi\u00adtal stra\u00adte\u00adgies,\u201d says Florian Theyer\u00admann, <\/strong>Mana\u00adging Direc\u00adtor Venture&Growth I DeepT\u00adech at FCF. Germany is the leader in Europe with around \u20ac2.2 billion in invest\u00adments (2021\u20132025); at the same time, a first wave of conso\u00adli\u00adda\u00adtion is begin\u00adning and IPOs of VC-finan\u00adced defense tech compa\u00adnies are also expec\u00adted in the future. <\/p>\n

Start-ups drive inno\u00adva\u00adtion in the defense sector<\/strong><\/p>\n

Market dyna\u00admics are incre\u00adasingly being shaped by start-ups and scale-ups, which react faster and more flexi\u00adbly to tech\u00adno\u00adlo\u00adgi\u00adcal requi\u00adre\u00adments than estab\u00adlished defense compa\u00adnies. Topics such as tech\u00adno\u00adlo\u00adgi\u00adcal sove\u00adreig\u00adnty, mili\u00adtary resi\u00adli\u00adence and digi\u00adtal secu\u00adrity have been incre\u00adasingly in focus since the start of the Ukraine-Russia war. <\/p>\n

At the same time, a large propor\u00adtion of invest\u00adments are concen\u00adtra\u00adted on a small number of leading compa\u00adnies. Start-ups such as Helsing, TEKEVER, Quan\u00adtum Systems, Iceye <\/em>and Desti\u00adnus<\/em> account for around 60% of the venture capi\u00adtal inves\u00adted since 2021. <\/p>\n

First wave of conso\u00adli\u00adda\u00adtion begins<\/strong><\/p>\n

The leading Defen\u00adseTech compa\u00adnies are incre\u00adasingly acting as conso\u00adli\u00adda\u00adtors them\u00adsel\u00adves. In the past three years, around 15 acqui\u00adsi\u00adti\u00adons have been made by these emer\u00adging cham\u00adpi\u00adons \u2014 inclu\u00adding both start-ups and a few estab\u00adlished compa\u00adnies. The M&A acti\u00advity of estab\u00adlished play\u00aders remains mode\u00adrate in comparison. <\/p>\n

There are also signs of move\u00adment on the capi\u00adtal market: While IPOs have so far mainly been carried out by estab\u00adlished compa\u00adnies such as Renk, Hensoldt or TKMS, IPOs by VC-finan\u00adced Defen\u00adseTech compa\u00adnies can also be expec\u00adted in the medium term.<\/p>\n

Germany at the top in Europe<\/strong><\/p>\n

Germany plays a leading role in the Euro\u00adpean defense tech ecosys\u00adtem. With around 2.2 billion euros in venture capi\u00adtal finan\u00adcing between 2021 and 2025, Germany leads Europe in terms of invest\u00adment volume. Compa\u00adnies such as Helsing and Quan\u00adtum Systems are making a signi\u00adfi\u00adcant contri\u00adbu\u00adtion to estab\u00adli\u00adshing the loca\u00adtion as an inno\u00adva\u00adtion hub for DefenseTech. <\/p>\n
