Berlin \u2014 The consu\u00admer AI startup Born has closed a Series A finan\u00adcing round of 15 million US dollars. The aim is to drive forward the deve\u00adlo\u00adp\u00adment of AI-supported \u201cAI Friends\u201d and to help inter\u00adna\u00adtio\u00adna\u00adlize the team. This brings the total funding raised to date to USD 25 million. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Leading inves\u00adtors from the consu\u00admer and gaming indus\u00adtry parti\u00adci\u00adpa\u00adted in the finan\u00adcing round: Accel<\/strong> (lead seed inves\u00adtor) also took part in the Series A, toge\u00adther with Tencent <\/strong>and Laton Ventures<\/strong>. Angel inves\u00adtors such as Ilkka Paana\u00adnen (Super\u00adcell), Riccardo Zacconi (King), Scott Belsky (ex-Adobe, A24 Part\u00adner) and Alex\u00adan\u00adder Pall (The Chains\u00admo\u00adkers) are also among the supporters. <\/p>\n

From chat\u00adbots to real digi\u00adtal companions<\/strong><\/p>\n

Born is posi\u00adtio\u00adned at the inter\u00adface of AI and consu\u00admer social. The company deve\u00adlops virtual friends that go beyond pure chat\u00adbots and aim to be soci\u00adally, emotio\u00adnally and cultu\u00adrally rele\u00advant. Unlike plat\u00adforms that focus on role-play\u00ading games or purely text-based conver\u00adsa\u00adti\u00adons, Born aims to build reso\u00adnant digi\u00adtal rela\u00adti\u00adonships that feel alive and sustainable. <\/p>\n

Fabian Kamberi, CEO and co-foun\u00adder<\/strong> of Berlin-based AI gaming startup Born<\/strong>, belie\u00adves that the AI compa\u00adn\u00adions curr\u00adently on the market are desi\u00adgned to exploit users and isolate them through one-to-one rela\u00adti\u00adonships with AI chat\u00adbots: \u201cIt seems like this is adding to the loneli\u00adness epide\u00admic instead of provi\u00adding more fun and giving users the oppor\u00adtu\u00adnity to improve their lives.\u201d<\/p>\n

A virtual pet called Pengu<\/strong><\/p>\n

The future of AI compa\u00adn\u00adions lies in shared expe\u00adri\u00aden\u00adces that streng\u00adthen bonds in the real world.
\nBorn\u2019s flag\u00adship product is an app that allows users to raise a cute virtual pet called Pengu, play mini-games with it and raise it toge\u00adther. You can think of it as a gene\u00adra\u00adtive, AI-powered Tama\u00adgot\u00adchi or Neopet, but one that requi\u00adres colla\u00adbo\u00adra\u00adtion with another human, such as a friend or partner. <\/p>\n

It is a free\u00admium app where users can pay for a Pengu Pass subscrip\u00adtion to get addi\u00adtio\u00adnal features. Although Born says the app has reached more than 15 million users world\u00adwide, the company has not disc\u00adlo\u00adsed how many of these are paying custo\u00admers \u2014 a crucial ques\u00adtion for any subscrip\u00adtion busi\u00adness in the consu\u00admer space. <\/p>\n

The idea behind Pengu is that the social aspect makes the pet a shared project and helps users connect with both the AI charac\u00adter and their real-life rela\u00adti\u00adonships. Now Born is prepa\u00adring to release new charac\u00adters for the Pengu app and launch another social AI product for young people. <\/p>\n
