Munich \u2014 Airbus Ventures, one of the most proli\u00adfic inves\u00adtors in space start\u00adups, has laun\u00adched a USD 155 million fund to be deployed in the emer\u00adging space sector as well as the broa\u00adder \u201cdeep tech\u201d ecosystem.
\nAirbus Ventures curr\u00adently has USD 465 million under manage\u00adment, with Fund\u2011Y being the fourth fund laun\u00adched to date.
\n\u201cThis fund is to explore new oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adties, and space is one of them,\u201d Thomas d\u2019Hal\u00adluin, Mana\u00adging Part\u00adner of Airbus Ventures, told CNBC.
\n\u2014 The move comes at a time when invest\u00adment in the space indus\u00adtry, parti\u00adcu\u00adlarly from venture capi\u00adta\u00adlists, is reco\u00adve\u00adring after two lean years.
\nAirbus Ventures\u2019 new \u201cFund\u2011Y\u201d targets long-term oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adties in early-stage deep tech start\u00adups, which d\u2019Hal\u00adluin defi\u00adnes as \u201cgoing back to the laws of physics and not being afraid of what\u2019s hard.\u201d
\nHisto\u00adri\u00adcally, \u201cdeep tech\u201d is a clas\u00adsi\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adtion for compa\u00adnies working on tech\u00adno\u00adlo\u00adgies that face major scien\u00adti\u00adfic or tech\u00adni\u00adcal obstacles.
\n\u2014 While Airbus Ventures has tradi\u00adtio\u00adnally deployed the majo\u00adrity of its funding in the U.S., d\u2019Hal\u00adluin explai\u00adned that Fund\u2011Y is inten\u00added to be global in scope.
\nIn parti\u00adcu\u00adlar, he sees \u201cvery strong momen\u00adtum\u201d for space start\u00adups in Europe and Japan<\/em>.
\nFoun\u00added in 2016, Airbus Ventures<\/strong> takes a diffe\u00adrent approach to tradi\u00adtio\u00adnal venture capi\u00adtal firms.
\nThe company keeps its distance from its name\u00adsake company, the Euro\u00adpean aero\u00adspace company, and more than half of its Fund\u2011Y comes from exter\u00adnal capi\u00adtal such as insti\u00adtu\u00adtio\u00adnal inves\u00adtors, private equity and family offices.
\nAbout a third of the capi\u00adtal provi\u00added by Airbus Ventures so far has gone to the space sector, it said, back\u00ading 14 pure-play compa\u00adnies in the space, inclu\u00adding startup Impulse, lunar cargo company ispace and track\u00ading service LeoLabs.
\n\u201cThis is about pati\u00adence. Often, and too often, people want instant wins. Space is not a place of instant grati\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adtion,\u201d said d\u2019Halluin.
\nHe empha\u00adsi\u00adzed the importance of funding foun\u00adders with the \u201cextre\u00admely rare\u201d trait of great execu\u00adtion and high\u00adligh\u00adted Airbus Ventures\u2019 support for Impulse.
\nThe startup was foun\u00added by Tom Muel\u00adler, who is known for deve\u00adlo\u00adping SpaceX\u2019s rocket engines.
\n\u201cImpulse was successful in its first mission thanks to Tom\u2019s 17 years of expe\u00adri\u00adence at SpaceX,\u201d said d\u2019Halluin.
