Colo\u00adgne \u2014 Food\u00adTech company Infi\u00adnite Roots has raised $58 million in a Series B finan\u00adcing round. The round was led by Dr. Hans Riegel Holding (HRH), one of the two share\u00adhol\u00adder holding compa\u00adnies of the Haribo Group<\/a>, with the support of the EIC Fund, an initia\u00adtive of the Euro\u00adpean Commis\u00adsion to make direct equity invest\u00adments in highly inno\u00adva\u00adtive start-ups and SMEs in Europe, and the REWE Group. \u2014 Beta\u00adgro Ventures (Thai\u00adland) and exis\u00adting inves\u00adtors such as Clay Capi\u00adtal, FoodLabs, Redal\u00adpine, Simon Capi\u00adtal and Happi\u00adness Capi\u00adtal also parti\u00adci\u00adpa\u00adted in the round.<\/p>\n

The food tech company was foun\u00added in 2018 by Dr. Mazen Rizk under the name Mushlabs. At the end of 2023, the company chan\u00adged its name to Infi\u00adnite Roots<\/strong>. The start-up culti\u00adva\u00adtes mush\u00adroom roots, known as myce\u00adlia, by feeding them with agri\u00adcul\u00adtu\u00adral waste. The aim is to use fermen\u00adta\u00adtion to produce a protein-rich substrate, which will then be proces\u00adsed into meat substi\u00adtute products, such as sausa\u00adges or patties, in a next step.<\/p>\n

Infi\u00adnite Roots, which curr\u00adently employs 67 people from 25 count\u00adries, will use the new capi\u00adtal injec\u00adtion to further deve\u00adlop the myce\u00adlium tech\u00adno\u00adlogy. The fungal myce\u00adlium multi\u00adplies by fermen\u00adta\u00adtion in biore\u00adac\u00adtors, regard\u00adless of loca\u00adtion and in a climate-friendly manner. Fungi are omni\u00advo\u00adres that can also obtain their nutri\u00adents from waste mate\u00adri\u00adals. \u201cRethin\u00adking the produc\u00adtion and consump\u00adtion of food has never been as urgent as it is today,\u201d empha\u00adsi\u00adzes foun\u00adder Dr. Mazen Rizk<\/strong>. The 38-year-old biotech\u00adno\u00adlo\u00adgist came to TU Hamburg from Leba\u00adnon in 2010 to do his doctorate.<\/p>\n

Infi\u00adnite Roots plans to use the funds raised to further deve\u00adlop its paten\u00adted myce\u00adlium tech\u00adno\u00adlo\u00adgies, expand capa\u00adcity and launch its first products. This step follows the conclu\u00adsion of one of the largest invest\u00adment rounds in the field of myce\u00adlium tech\u00adno\u00adlogy in Europe. The company\u2019s long-term vision is to play a key role in trans\u00adforming the global food system by utili\u00adzing the diverse appli\u00adca\u00adti\u00adons of mush\u00adroom myce\u00adlium. The Hamburg-based food tech has raised a total of 73 million dollars in capi\u00adtal since it was foun\u00added in 2018.<\/p>\n

About EIC Fund<\/strong><\/p>\n

The EIC Fund is the special fund of the Euro\u00adpean Inno\u00adva\u00adtion Coun\u00adcil and thus the central invest\u00adment vehicle of the Euro\u00adpean Commis\u00adsion. It serves to imple\u00adment the Euro\u00adpean Commis\u00adsi\u00adon\u2019s EIC Acce\u00adle\u00adra\u00adtor program, which supports inno\u00adva\u00adtive and sustainable Euro\u00adpean growth compa\u00adnies.
