B\u00f6hrin\u00adger Ingel\u00adheim Venture Fund (BIVF) acted as lead inves\u00adtor, with parti\u00adci\u00adpa\u00adtion from High-Tech Gr\u00fcn\u00adder\u00adfonds (HTGF), the VC Fonds Tech\u00adno\u00adlo\u00adgie of IBB Betei\u00adli\u00adgungs\u00adge\u00adsell\u00adschaft, and Future Capital.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytext\">Formally, the deve\u00adlo\u00adp\u00adment of Aigno\u00adstics began in early 2018 when rese\u00adar\u00adchers from Charit\u00e9 and TU Berlin were accepted into BIH\u2019s Digi\u00adtal Health Acce\u00adle\u00adra\u00adtor (DHA) program to further deve\u00adlop their inno\u00adva\u00adtive rese\u00adarch in AI-based patho\u00adlogy and \u201cExplainable AI\u201d into a spin-off company.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytext\">Howe\u00adver, the foun\u00adda\u00adtion for Aigno\u00adstics was laid much earlier, by Prof. Frede\u00adrick Klau\u00adschen, deputy. Direc\u00adtor of the Insti\u00adtute of Patho\u00adlogy at Charit\u00e9, and rese\u00adar\u00adchers from the Fraun\u00adho\u00adfer Gesell\u00adschaft and TU Berlin, led by Prof. Klaus-Robert M\u00fcller, Direc\u00adtor of the Berlin Center for Machine Lear\u00adning (BZML), who filed their first patent for AI-based patho\u00adlogy back in 2011. Prof. Klau\u00adschen, who studied physics as well as medi\u00adcine, reco\u00adgni\u00adzed the poten\u00adtial of AI for patho\u00adlogy early on. \u201cWhile patho\u00adlo\u00adgists are excel\u00adlent at compre\u00adhen\u00adsi\u00advely analy\u00adzing the morpho\u00adlo\u00adgi\u00adcal features of tissues in indi\u00advi\u00addual samples, AI is parti\u00adcu\u00adlarly well-suited for evalua\u00adting indi\u00advi\u00addual features in a stan\u00addar\u00addi\u00adzed and quan\u00adti\u00adta\u00adtive manner, as well as unco\u00adve\u00adring corre\u00adla\u00adti\u00adons in larger data\u00adsets, such as clini\u00adcal trials,\u201d explains Prof. Klauschen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytext\">Aigno\u00adstics\u2019 proprie\u00adtary \u201cExplainable AI\u201d plat\u00adform is parti\u00adcu\u00adlarly well suited for such unco\u00adve\u00adring of new contexts. It is based on rese\u00adarch by the Fraun\u00adho\u00adfer Gesell\u00adschaft, Charit\u00e9 and TU Berlin and allows to over\u00adcome the often criti\u00adci\u00adzed \u201cblack box\u201d problem of AI in patho\u00adlogy. \u201cExplainable AI is a new and exci\u00adting field in modern AI rese\u00adarch with a lot of poten\u00adtial for both acade\u00admia and indus\u00adtry,\u201d said Prof. M\u00fcller. \u201cFor exam\u00adple, we can train our AI with tissue samples that have a posi\u00adtive or nega\u00adtive response to therapy. We can then have the AI graphi\u00adcally \u201cexplain\u201d to us which morpho\u00adlo\u00adgi\u00adcal charac\u00adte\u00adristics distin\u00adgu\u00adish the posi\u00adtive cases from the nega\u00adtive cases,\u201d Dr. Maxi\u00admi\u00adlian Alber, CTO of Aigno\u00adstics, explains further. \u201cThis tech\u00adno\u00adlogy is not only essen\u00adtial for routine diagno\u00adstics, where it can help verify the func\u00adtio\u00adning of AI appli\u00adca\u00adti\u00adons, but is also a very inte\u00adres\u00adt\u00ading approach to find poten\u00adtial new biomar\u00adkers that can predict therapy response,\u201d adds Prof. Klauschen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytext\">\u201cWhat makes us unique, howe\u00adver, is not only our tech\u00adno\u00adlogy, but also our orga\u00adniza\u00adtio\u00adnal struc\u00adture.
