Twice the size of its prede\u00adces\u00adsor fund, making it the largest Liefe Science fund ever raised by the company. The invest\u00adment stra\u00adtegy remains in place: Poten\u00adtial port\u00adfo\u00adlio compa\u00adnies are start-ups from the biotech and medtech sectors.<\/p>\n<p>The first closing of Life Science Fund IV took place at the end of 2012 in the amount of 70 million euros. In a diffi\u00adcult fund\u00adrai\u00adsing envi\u00adron\u00adment, the final closing in 2013 then reached 85 million euros. \u2014 <strong>Rainer Stroh\u00admen\u00adger<\/strong>, <strong>Mana\u00adging Part\u00adner at Welling\u00adton Part\u00adners<\/strong>, and his team targe\u00adted drug-deve\u00adlo\u00adping biotech\u00adno\u00adlogy compa\u00adnies with Life Science Fund IV only in excep\u00adtio\u00adnal cases. The focus was prima\u00adrily on medi\u00adcal tech\u00adno\u00adlogy and diagno\u00adstics companies.<\/p>\n<p>Whereas at that time around EUR 7 million to EUR 10 million were earmarked for invest\u00adment in a company, the spread for the succes\u00adsor may be wider: <strong>EUR 2 million to EUR 20 million was issued as a target corri\u00addor at the end of July<\/strong>. In total, the port\u00adfo\u00adlio is to be expan\u00added by 15 to 20 compa\u00adnies. Geogra\u00adphi\u00adcally, the focus is as before on German-spea\u00adking Europe. Howe\u00adver, invest\u00adments in compa\u00adnies from other regi\u00adons of the world are not excluded. The focus will again be some\u00adwhat broa\u00addened: New biotech plat\u00adform tech\u00adno\u00adlo\u00adgies, new thera\u00adpeu\u00adtics and diagno\u00adstics, e\u2011health busi\u00adness models and medi\u00adcal tech\u00adno\u00adlogy ideas are all being considered.<\/p>\n<p>For the current fund, Stroh\u00admen\u00adger and <strong>Mana\u00adging Part\u00adner Regina Hodits (photo<\/strong> ) attrac\u00adted new inves\u00adtors such as <strong>KfW Kapi\u00adtal, Talanx <\/strong>and<strong> UTIMCO, <\/strong>the <strong>A &amp; M invest\u00adment company of the Univer\u00adsity of Texas (USA)<\/strong>. Many inves\u00adtors who had parti\u00adci\u00adpa\u00adted in the old funds also moved back in \u2014 inclu\u00adding a number of family offices, the Euro\u00adpean Invest\u00adment Fund and the Euro\u00adpean Invest\u00adment&nbsp;Bank.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe see clear oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adties for above-average returns through invest\u00adments in pionee\u00adring Euro\u00adpean life scien\u00adces compa\u00adnies. Given the world-leading inno\u00adva\u00adtion ecosys\u00adtem in Europe, espe\u00adci\u00adally in the German-spea\u00adking region, coupled with a lack of quali\u00adfied finan\u00adcial inves\u00adtors in the Euro\u00adpean life scien\u00adces sector, we have alre\u00adady iden\u00adti\u00adfied promi\u00adsing invest\u00adment oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adties,\u201d Hodits said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGerman insti\u00adtu\u00adtio\u00adnal inves\u00adtors such as insu\u00adrance compa\u00adnies are also incre\u00adasingly inves\u00adt\u00ading in venture capi\u00adtal funds, and in the life scien\u00adces and health\u00adcare sectors as well, as eviden\u00adced by Talanx\u2019s invest\u00adment in our new fund, for exam\u00adple. In Europe, and espe\u00adci\u00adally in Germany, there are a large number of attrac\u00adtive invest\u00adment oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adties in the life scien\u00adces sector for which there is still not enough capi\u00adtal. Ther\u00ade\u00adfore, exis\u00adting German funds can invest signi\u00adfi\u00adcantly more money in the local market than is available today, and there is defi\u00adni\u00adtely poten\u00adtial for new funds in some areas such as digi\u00adtal health.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Welling\u00adton Part\u00adners\u2019 successful exits include invest\u00adments in Acte\u00adl\u00adion (sale to John\u00adson &amp; John\u00adson), Rigon\u00adtec (sale to MSD), Syme\u00adtis (sale to Boston Scien\u00adti\u00adfic) and Defi\u00adni\u00adens, an infor\u00adma\u00adtics specia\u00adlist for tissue sample analy\u00adsis.
