Amster\u00addam \u2014 Dutch e\u2011bike manu\u00adfac\u00adtu\u00adrer VanMoof has recei\u00adved a further 128 million US dollars from inves\u00adtors \u2014 the equi\u00adva\u00adlent of around 108.5 million euros. Accor\u00adding to the company, this is \u201cthe largest Series C invest\u00adment ever made for a Euro\u00adpean e\u2011bike brand.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Toge\u00adther with the two previous finan\u00adcing rounds last year, VanMoof now has total funding of $182 million (about 154 million euros). The current funding round was led by Hill\u00adhouse Invest\u00adment, an Asia-based private equity firm. Another new inves\u00adtor is Gillian Tans, the former CEO of Booking.com. Also on board were exis\u00adting inves\u00adtors Norwest Venture Part\u00adners, Felix Capi\u00adtal, Balder\u00adton Capi\u00adtal and Triple\u00adPoint Capital.<\/p>\n

The Dutch plan to use the new funds to increase produc\u00adtion capa\u00adcity, conti\u00adnue the deve\u00adlo\u00adp\u00adment of new tech\u00adno\u00adlo\u00adgies and improve bike speci\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adti\u00adons and relia\u00adbi\u00adlity. \u201cWe are reinven\u00adting, desig\u00adning and re-engi\u00adnee\u00adring every compo\u00adnent of the bicy\u00adcle. This has never been done before and will fore\u00adver change the way a bike is made, sold and serviced,\u201d lets Taco Carlier (photo), co-foun\u00adder of VanMoof<\/strong>. This will be instru\u00admen\u00adtal in getting 10 million people on our bikes in the next five years.\u201d<\/p>\n

VanMoof was foun\u00added in 2009 by brot\u00adhers Taco and Ties Carlier<\/strong>, the company curr\u00adently offers two e\u2011bike models S3 and X3. Both feature auto\u00adma\u00adtic elec\u00adtro\u00adnic shif\u00adting, built-in anti-theft tech\u00adno\u00adlogy, and the Apple Find My Network loca\u00adtion func\u00adtion, among other features. Prices start at 2,198 euros.<\/p>\n

The Amster\u00addam-based star\u00adtup\u2019s high-end bikes were alre\u00adady selling well, but the Corona-rela\u00adted lock\u00addowns have addi\u00adtio\u00adnally crea\u00adted an order boom. Sales figu\u00adres are expec\u00adted to more than triple in 2020. This spring<\/a>, the company put the \u201cglobal driver commu\u00adnity\u201d at \u201c150,000 drivers \u2014 and growing.\u201d At that time, VanMoof had presen\u00adces in Amster\u00addam, Berlin, London, New York, Paris, San Fran\u00adcisco, Seat\u00adtle and Tokyo. Retail loca\u00adti\u00adons have now been estab\u00adlished in 50 cities, the company says. VanMoof has iden\u00adti\u00adfied the USA as the largest growth market.<\/p>\n

In April, VanMoof announ\u00adced some new products. This year, for exam\u00adple, the Dutch e\u2011bike manu\u00adfac\u00adtu\u00adrer laun\u00adched a detacha\u00adble power\u00adbank desi\u00adgned to give riders up to 100 kilo\u00adme\u00adters of addi\u00adtio\u00adnal range on VanMoof bikes, which can be easily char\u00adged indoors. In addi\u00adtion, the bikes now feature a more visi\u00adble matrix display, rede\u00adsi\u00adgned fender flaps and pedals, and better inter\u00adnal wiring. In addi\u00adtion, as an acces\u00adsory, VanMoof\u2019s bike boxes are now more compact and contain 70% less plastic.<\/p>\n
